Borate Corrosion Testing

The effects of BoraSol-WP® on various metals have been evaluated according to AWPA Test Procedure E 12-94, Standard Method of Determining Corrosion of Metal in Contact with Treated Wood.

CRT Laboratories ((Orange, CA) tested 2” x 4” samples of Southern Yellow Pine Pressure Treated with Quality Borate’s Disodium Octaborate Tetrahydrate (DOT) to a retention of 0.30 lbs/ft of Borate (B2O3).

Material Corrosion Rate (mils/year)
SAE 1010 Steel <2.5
CDA 230 85-15 Red Brass 0.393
AA 2024-T3 Aluminum 0.307
ASTM A 123 Hot Dip Galvanized SAE 1010 Steel <3.1

The test results show ratings of nothing less than excellent ratings when compared to the scale of Corrosion Resistance as cited from Mars G. Fontana’s Corrosion Engineering, 3rd Edition, McGraw Hill, 1986.

Corrosion Rating Scale of Resistance

Fair 20-50 0.5-1.0
Poor 50-200 1.0-5.0
